Another day, another barrage of news reports of sexual harassment and sexual assaults. The #MeToo social media campaign has broken the silence of exploitation and degradation. This is the Millennials’ gift to all women. They started a real revolution. A new shot has been heard around the world.

The Millennials, who we’ve joked about, maligned, made the brunt of workplace videos on “how not to behave in the workplace,” deserve a standing ovation. As their mothers, aunts, and mentors, we have told them for years that sexual harassment is a “zero tolerance” work place issue. “We just don’t tolerate it,” we told them. Except we did. We didn’t like it. We wrote anti-harassment policies. We told our colleagues to “go to HR” if they felt “uncomfortable.” We conducted training. But when the rubber really hit the road, only the gutsy few with backbones of steel flew the flag and allowed their names to be attached to the sordid topic.

The Millennials believed us when we told them about zero tolerance. Evolution/Revolution is a great thing. Cheers to the Millennials!

On January 23, 2018, our firm will host a seminar “When Policy is Not Enough: Anticipating, Enforcing and Mitigating Liability as Sexual Harassment Claims Skyrocket,” from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at the Proximity Hotel in Greensboro. You are welcome to attend and bring a business colleague.
